Fastening methods mirror those of other sheathing materials, using screws or nails spaced per code and manufacturer instructions. In fire-rated assemblies, details must match those in the systems in GA-600 Fire Resistance and Sound Control Design Manual. Panel edges and ends typically do not need to be gapped thanks to dimensional stability.
Depending on the chosen cladding system, joints may be left untreated or sealed with mastic. Air and water barrier systems can also be used as specified by the manufacturer. Glass mat gypsum sheathing provides a continuous surface suitable for both adhesive-attached systems, such as EIFS, and mechanically fastened claddings.
In residential exterior wall assemblies, the sheathing contributes to the overall building envelope by supporting insulation placement, resisting lateral forces, and improving wind resistance. The IRC details specific requirements for panel thickness, fastening, and joint treatment. For instance, minimum ½-inch gypsum panels are required on one or both sides of BWPs, and standard panel sizes comply with these provisions. Glass mat gypsum sheathing easily meets these parameters and offers a straightforward path to code compliance.
The product is also appropriate in regions with heightened wildfire risk. The International Wildland-Urban Interface Code (IWUIC) permits the use of gypsum sheathing in exterior wall construction because it satisfies Chapter 5 performance requirements. In jurisdictions that require fully fire-rated exterior walls, fire-resistive designs are available in the GA-600 manual.
